Quick privacy summary: True Velocity does not transmit or share your location. GPS is used on-device to calculate your real-time speed, and — only when you have enabled Log Trips and explicitly started a trip recording — to log a summary of that trip locally on your iPhone. Trip data never leaves your device. If you enable Map Visualization, the route path (GPS coordinates) for that trip is also saved locally on your device only.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is True Velocity?

True Velocity is a precision GPS speedometer for iPhone. It displays both an analogue dial and a large digital speed readout in real time using your device's built-in GPS. You can choose from three leather-grain backgrounds to personalize the look of the app, and optionally record trips with duration, distance, top speed, and average speed. Trips can be paused and resumed mid-journey, and each saved trip can be viewed on an interactive map — all stored privately on your device.

How do I change the background?

Tap the gear icon in the bottom-right corner of the main screen, choose Settings, and use the Background selector to switch between Black, Oxblood, and Tan. The background changes instantly with no restart required.

Does the app track or store my location?

The live speedometer uses GPS solely to calculate your current speed and does not store or transmit location data. If you enable trip recording and start a trip, the app saves a summary of that trip locally on your iPhone (duration, distance, top speed, and average speed). If you also enable Map Visualization, the GPS coordinates of your route are additionally saved locally so the trip can be shown on a map. All trip data is stored only on your device and is never uploaded, transmitted, or shared. The app does not record background location outside of an active trip recording.

Why does the app show GPS accuracy in metres?

GPS accuracy can vary depending on signal strength, surroundings, and satellite visibility. True Velocity displays the current horizontal accuracy (in metres) so you can see how precise the GPS signal is. Lower numbers indicate better accuracy.

What happens if GPS signal is weak?

If the app cannot obtain a reliable GPS signal, a low accuracy warning is shown. Speed readings may be delayed or less precise until signal quality improves.

How do I change between MPH and KMH?

Tap the gear icon in the bottom-right corner of the main screen, choose Settings, and use the MPH / KMH selector under Units.

How do I open the Trips list?

Tap the gear icon in the bottom-right corner of the main screen and choose Trips.

How do I enable trip recording?

Open the Trips screen (gear icon → Trips) and turn on the Log Trips toggle at the top. Because trip recording must continue accurately if your screen locks, iOS will ask for Always Allow location access — grant this for trip recording to work. Once Log Trips is on, a red record button appears on the main speedometer screen.

How do I record a trip?

With Log Trips enabled, tap the red record button on the main screen to start. Tap it again to stop. The trip is then saved to your Trips list with duration, distance, top speed, and average speed. You can start and stop trips as often as you like.

Can I pause a trip mid-journey?

Yes. While a trip is recording, tap the pause button to temporarily stop logging — useful if you pull into a service station or stop somewhere you don't want counted as part of the journey. Tap the button again to resume recording. Pausing keeps your total trip time and distance intact so you can continue the same trip when you're ready.

Can the app record a trip while it's in the background or my screen is locked?

Yes. Once you have explicitly started a trip from the main screen, True Velocity continues to log GPS in the background so the trip remains accurate if your screen locks or you switch apps. Background location is only active during an in-progress trip — the moment you tap stop, background location updates are disabled. The app never logs your location in the background outside of a trip you started.

Where are my trips stored? Are they uploaded anywhere?

Trips are stored locally on your iPhone only. They are not uploaded to iCloud, the developer, or any third party. If Map Visualization is enabled, GPS route coordinates are also stored locally as part of the trip. If you delete the app, your entire trip history is removed with it.

Why are some short trips not saved?

To avoid cluttering your trip list with accidental taps or stationary recordings, trips shorter than 30 seconds or under 100 metres are automatically discarded when you stop recording.

How is trip distance calculated?

True Velocity calculates distance by integrating your GPS-reported speed over time, rather than summing positional jumps. Because GPS speed is derived from the Doppler shift of satellite signals, this approach is far more stable than coordinate-based distance and is much less affected by GPS jitter when stationary or in poor signal areas.

What happens if the app is force-closed during a trip?

Trip progress is saved every two seconds while recording, so if the app is force-closed or terminated by the system mid-trip, the trip is automatically finalised and saved the next time you launch the app (provided it meets the minimum duration and distance thresholds).

How do I view a trip on a map?

Tap any saved trip in the Trips list to open its detail view, then tap the map to see your route visualised on an interactive Apple Maps view. Map Visualization must be enabled in the Trips settings for route data to be recorded — trips saved before enabling this feature will not have route data available.

How do I rename or delete a trip?

In the Trips list, swipe left on a trip to reveal Rename and Delete options. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.

Is an account required?

No account is required. True Velocity works entirely on your device.

Does the app work offline?

Yes. True Velocity does not require an internet connection for the speedometer or trip recording. Map Visualization uses Apple Maps, which may require an internet connection to load map tiles. GPS signal quality may also be affected by indoor environments or signal obstruction.

How does the trial and purchase work?

True Velocity includes a seven-day trial period. After the trial ends, a one-time purchase is required to continue using the app. Payments are processed securely by Apple through In-App Purchase. The developer does not receive your payment details.

What devices are supported?

True Velocity supports iPhone running iOS 18.0 or later.
